The spirit of Eli - Art Journal Page

Hello again! Here's my second post for today, another Art Journal Page!

I'm trying to get caught up with some blogging and still have a couple more projects to show you so watch out for those tomorrow!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I used the following materials:

MEDIUMS USED
White Gesso
DecoArt Crafters Acrylic (Flesh, Black)
Other Acrylic Paint (Burnt Umber)
Gelatos (Coconut)
PVA Glue
Archival Ink (Watering Can)

OTHER PRODUCTS USED
Kraft card (off-cut strips from a few other projects)

All products above available from That Craft Place.

ANYTHING ELSE
Dylusions A4 Art Journal
Copier paper
Unbleached Calico fabric
Tsukineko Walnut Ink Antiquing Solution (Walnut & Eucalyptus)
Adirondack Spray Ink (Pesto)
Derwent Academy Watercolour Pencils
Brown Twine

And last but certainly not least!... Two feathers from Eli, an African Grey Parrot belonging to a friend in the US!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Summary Process:

Kraft card off-cuts glued to the page with PVA Glue before painting the whole page with white Gesso.

Sprayed with the Tsukineko and Adirondack spray inks and colours from the totem pole added to random pieces of layered kraft card.

Face drawn onto copier paper and painted with white Gesso before gluing to the page.  Colour and detail was then added using acrylic paint, Gelatos, and watercolour pencils.

I made the garment and headband from natural Calico fabric which I stained with the same inks that were used in the background.

I found a totem pole image on the internet, printing it in draft quality so that the Ink was faint. I then used watercolor pencils to bring out details and round off any pixelated areas.

Take me to your leader! - Art Journal Page

Good morning! Good news from my hospital appointment the other day... my eyes (with my glasses!) exceed the wheelchair clinics requirements, so they trust me not to blindly run over a little old lady when our and about in my powerchair!  Still got a road proficiency test to do though, whatever that entails!!

Sadly though, one of my 3 dogs, my old poor sweet Lucy, has got serious problems with her feet, her claws in particular, which are giving her pain and making her lame. She goes in for surgery on Monday although it got extremely bad today so I'm going to see what they suggest tomorrow morning.  They are going to test some skin samples taken whilst there as they possibly suspect an auto-immune condition as the underlying cause.  So please keep your fingers crossed for my girlie.  She's around 13 years old now!

Today I'd like to share an art journal page created a week or so ago. This was just a bit of fun , indulging my penchant for all things science fiction!

 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I used the following materials:

MEDIUMS USED
White Gesso
DoCrafts Artiste Spritzing Ink (Aubergine & Hematite)
Mod Podge (Gloss)
PVA Glue
DecoArt Dazzling Metallics (Silver)
Gelatos (Coconut, Green Tea, Red Cherry, Guava)
Archival Ink (Jet Black)
Molotow Paint Marker (White & Black)

All products above available from That Craft Place.

ANYTHING ELSE
Dylusions A4 Art Journal
Copier paper
Derwent Academy Watercolour Pencils (Black)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Summary Process:

I created this page over some brickwork Stencil clean-off, some of which is showing through the white dots.

I applied Mod Podge Gloss circles randomly on the page to act as a resist before spraying with the DoCrafts sprays.  Once I had rubbed back the circle areas and the page had dried, I inked the edges with Jet Black Archival Ink.

I drew Marvin the martian (minus his space helmet) onto copier paper, painted over with white Gesso, and cut out. Once glued to the page I used Gelatos and a black watercolour pencil to add the colour and detail.  I then added his space helmet with white Gelato, using Silver DecoArt Dazzling Metallics paint for the collar part.

To finish, the writing was done free- hand using Molotow Paint Markers. The "MARVIN" was painted with the silver paint.

Make your own Art Journal

Hey folks! Today I'm off to hospital for a Wheelchair-Services ordered eye test to make sure I'm "safe" to drive my powerchair outdoors! That should be fun! Then I have to take a road proficiency test before they'll let me loose outside my home!

Anyway, I want to share with you an Art Journal I made for my young niece.

I did the first page inside for her to get her going!...

Summary Process:

COVER

I used an old pizza box for the cover and covered it with crinkled brown packaging paper using PVA Glue, before giving a coat of white Gesso.  I then sprayed with DoCrafts Artiste Spritzing Inks.

I stamped a sheet of white tissue paper with script and grid stamps using Archival Ink in both Jet Black and Watering Can and adhered to the cover using PVA Glue.

I finished with a final coat of PVA. The layers of PVA Glue gave the cover wonderful strength AND flexibility which gave the finished journal a wonderful feel.

The "Zahra's Art" was initially stamped but I didn't feel it was bold enough so I went over the stamping with paint markers.

INSIDE PAGES

All the pages in this journal were basic 160gsm white cardstock as my niece is not going to be abusing it with the amount of sprays and paints that us mixed media journalers throw at our pages!

I used A4 sheets which were folded on various ways to give flaps and envelope pockets (2 pages secured together with double sided tape) throughout the journal.  The edges of several pages were punched with a Tonic edge punch.

I stenciled and stamped a few of the pages to give starting points for her if needed.

BINDING

I wanted to find a method of binding that didn't leave strings on the outside of the spine and came across this YouTube video!

I followed this almost exactly with exception to the structure of the cover.

My tip when using this method is PLENTY of glue! It makes a really secure and tight binding which should last a long long time.

Thank you as always for popping by.  I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and showcase. I'll certainly be making another using this method!  I really enjoyed working on a smaller journal page (I usually use a double page spread in an A4 Dylusions Journal).

I'll be making myself one using thick mixed media paper and perhaps not quite as thick as this one.

Anyway, wish me luck at hospital, no doubt I'll have a long wait in the waiting room so I'll be taking something to doodle in (a smaller journal would have been handy today!!).

You Bewitch Me - That Craft Place - Shadow Box

Good morning!  It is time for a new challenge over at the
That Craft Place challenge blog

This fortnight the theme is

MIXED MEDIA ANYTHING GOES

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I used the following materials:

THAT CRAFT PLACE MDF / GREYBOARD: MDF 8" x 8" Shadow Box, MDF Labels, MDF Spider's Web, MDF Corner Flourish, Greyboard Padlock, Greyboard Bones.

MEDIUMS USED: Black Gesso, White Gesso, Archival Ink (Jet Black), Distress Ink (Gathered Twigs), Mod Podge Matte, Americana Triple Thick, Crackle Accents, DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics (Quinacridone Gold), Collall Silicone Glue Gel.

OTHER PRODUCTS USED: Graphic45 8" Paper Pad (Rare Oddities), Black Textured Cardstock, Mini Screw Top Bottles, Metal Charms, Brads, Acetate.

All products above available from That Craft Place.

ANYTHING ELSE: Chain from my local DIY, Food Colouring, Black Feather, Unused Canvas Corner Wedges, Tonic Edge Punch, Black Sharpie.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Here are some more photos & a bit of info!

The depth of these shadow boxes is perfect! Just over an inch deep inside, so just right for filling with all kinds of goodies.  All the papers on this project came from one Graphic45 pad, with plenty to spare.

I took this photo at night under a desk lamp to show the shadows cast by the various elements!

Hidden up on the top shelf are tiny potion bottles that I fussy cut from the Graphic45 pad and coated with Americana Triple Thick.  There are other potion bottles and trinkets dotted elsewhere round the project. I also used dots of the Triple Thick for the owls eyes, which cut from the same paper pad.  The little MDF label was painted with black Gesso before sponging lightly with white Gesso. I then finished it with a coat of Quinacridone Gold paint by DecoArt.

The ghosts on this project were cut from acetate and coated with Crackle Accents. I got this idea, and the tiny books which are further down, from Anne's Paper Creations which I've linked to at the end of this post.

I painted the MDF Spider's web with black Gesso and added Triple Thick to the spider.  The label was also painted with black Gesso before gluing one of the quotes from the paper pad to it.  I mounted some of the fussy cut pieces on card for extra strength, and the skeleton is one of the pieces I did that with.

I attached this little mini book with a bread to the end of a short length of chain. I also added a Greyboard Padlock to which I had done the same technique as on the MDF label mentioned previously (I also used the same technique for the metal charms and bottle lids).

The above 2 photos show in more detail the mini books and potion bottles (filled with red and green diluted food colouring).  As with the other black areas, the corner flourish was painted with black Gesso.

Patterned paper from the same pad around the edges of the box add a bit more interest! I waited to choose these papers until the end so that I didn't inadvertently use a paper I wish I'd saved for the front!

I covered the back of the box with textured black cardstock and added a second piece that I had punched using a Tonic edge punch. I finished off with more papers and a mini booklet which is blank inside.
